LOOKING at the world from different perspectives opens up a world of possibilities.
This is the driving influence for AkzoNobel’s Colour of the Year 2012, named ‘Tea Dance’ — a blushing, lively red shade that is at once whimsical and serious, dynamic and soft, thus bringing about the dominant concept for 2012 “Possibilities”.
With the new Colour of the Year, 2012 will be a year of new and great opportunities.
A year that will entail bigger and greater things; perhaps a new house, a better job, an addition to the family, all of which are possible with the new Colour of the Year 2012.
All in all, 2012 will be a year that talks about anticipation and finding that greatness amidst everything else.
The colour mood for 2011 was clean, fresh and joyful. 2012 is full of take-charge optimism, which translates into full-bodied hues with not only lots of character, but also tender, hushed pastels, that complement one another in new ways.
Within a palette of hues, ‘Tea Dance’ offers many possibilities: contrasting one colour, bringing out a certain cool quality in the next, changing the look in unpredictable ways.
Once a year, the Aesthetic Centre for AkzoNobel meets with an international group of creative experts from the fields of colour, design, architecture, and fashion, all with their fingers on the pulse of the latest trends and colour, to discuss and decide the colours that will be key for the following year. ColourFutures is the result of this ongoing international research.
These experts represent different parts of the world — South-East Asia, India, the United States/Canada, South America, South Africa and all regions of Europe.
These experts draw on a variety of national and international sources from fine art to technology and design, nature and architecture to fashion and music to popular culture. Their views and insights about how trends and colour palettes will develop and evolve, what the most important influences are and how we will be living, are captured within ColourFutures a year in advance in order to give those in the design industry the information they need to know to keep up to date with all trend developments.
ColourFutures presents one dominant trend, which this year is “Possibilities,” and five relating trends which stem from this one idea.
Each trend is translated into a contemporary colour palette and from these, one ‘Colour of the Year’ is selected — ‘Tea Dance’ — the single colour that best sums up the prevailing mood, attitude and fashion of the time.
“The colour palette for 2012 is a visual representation of the world’s new understanding of our need for diversity — of concepts, viewpoints and approaches.
“Red is held in high regard around the world, especially in Asia, for its association with good fortune and festivity.
“The fact that it can mean so many things to different people is a reminder to ourselves not to look for simple solutions, but to open our perspectives to new ideas which are waiting to be discovered. The world has so much to offer,” said Decorative Paints, South-East Asia and Pacific at AkzoNobel managing director Jeremy Rowe.
“AkzoNobel is a leading colour authority and the largest colour manufacturer worldwide. We pride ourselves on our knowledge of colour and design.
“It is our responsibility to know how colour works and share our knowledge with people around the world so that they understand how colour can change the way we view our surroundings.
“We hope that this will in turn inspire them to redecorate their surroundings and open themselves to new perspectives, new possibilities,” he added.
