ABOUT 4,000 people, mainly those living in Seberang Prai, gathered at the Sungai Bakap community hall for the state-level Deepavali open house.
Intermittent showers did not prevent them from coming in droves to join in the festive celebration.
They were treated to an assortment of dishes including thosai, roti jala, chicken curry, koay teow, satay, bihun, fried chicken, nyonya kuih, ais kacang as well as hot and cold drinks.
Inside the hall, the guests were entertained with cultural dances and songs by members of Vaishvarn Productions from George Town as well as a saxophone performance by Selvaraj Jeyaraman.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his wife Betty Chew, accompanied Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and his consort Toh Puan Hajjah Majimor Shariff, who were the main dignitaries at the event.
Tucking in: Part of the crowd ar the state-level Deepavali open house at Dewan Serbaguna Sungai Bakap in Nibong Tebal. Others present included Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mansor Othman, Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy, State Secretary Datuk Farizan Darus, state executive councillors Phee Booh Poh, Lim Hock Seng, Law Choo Kiang, Danny Law Heng Kiang, state assemblymen Tan Beng Huat, Ong Chin Wen, Maktar Shapee and Seberang Prai municipal councillors as well as local community leaders.
Japanese Consul-General Tetsuro Kai and Indonesian Consul-General Chilman Arisman were also present.
Ramasamy, who played host, said the event was held on the mainland for the first time this year as the state wanted Seberang Prai residents to join in the celebrations.
“Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his fellow exco members had earlier hosted their own Deepavali open house in the Penang Times Square on Deepavali day itself.
“So, we decided to host a state-level Deepavali open house on the mainland to be fair to those residing here,” he said at the event on Sunday.
Lim later said that although the event was not lavish, he was pleased with the good turnout.
