Power failure left hundreds of ETS passengers waiting for hours

POWER failure left hundreds of passengers on the Electric Train Service (ETS) stranded near Tapah.

Another 350 people were left waiting for hours at the Ipoh Railway Station for their 2pm Kuala Lumpur-bound train.

Business development executive Roslan Ahmad, 45, said his 12-year-old daughter and mother-in-law had left for Rawang from Ipoh on the 11.10am train.

Crowded: ETS passengers waiting at the platform of the Ipoh railway station.

“According to them, the train came to a standstill before Tapah, about 40 minutes after leaving the railway station in Ipoh.

“They were trapped inside for nearly three hours without food and insufficient air as the windows could not be opened,” he said.

Roslan said a locomotive head was sent to their rescue at about 2.30pm.

“My daughter said that the locomotive head slowly pulled the stranded coaches towards Kuala Lumpur at about 3pm,” he said.

Teacher Kamarulzaman Khamis, 39, said he, his wife and their two children were on their way to Ipoh from Seremban when the train stopped at the Tapah Road station.

“There was less air in the carriage until the authorities managed to open the window for the passengers,” he said, adding that the authorities did not inform them on what had happened until they insisted on some answers.

He, however, added that the authorities had apologised for the inconvenience caused.

ETS chief operations officer Azizullah Kinayatullah said a power failure occurred at the Ipoh-Tapah Road stretch from 11am to 4pm due to problems at the overhead lines.

“Without electricity, the trains are unable to operate,” he added.
