Treasure trove of books

What say you on the issue below?

IF knowledge is mankind’s greatest wealth, then the Popular Mega Book Fair 2011, currently taking place at the Straits Quay Convention Centre, is literally a treasure trove.

From today until Dec 4, visitors can browse close to a quarter million publications in various languages, covering every subject imaginable.

Held for the fifth year running, the fair’s new venue covers some 30,000sq ft of exhibition space, and also includes stationery, music and multimedia items.

Speaking at a special media preview yesterday, Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd senior business development manager Siew Sheau Liang said visitors could expect to find the best literary titles.

“Book lovers from all walks of life will be wowed by the massive number of English and Chinese books, tagged at irresistible prices with discounts up to 70%,” he continues.

Popular’s special projects manager Helen Goh said that besides the attractive discounts, visitors could also look forward to super value, extremely low-priced ‘Daily Specials’.

Those who spend above RM200 in a single receipt are entitled to a RM10 gift voucher for subsequent use. On top of that, the first 100 customers daily who spend that amount will get additional F&B vouchers from selected outlets at Straits Quay.

The company has also taken time to be kind with its One Care — One Hope Charity Campaign, a collaboration with HOPE Education Foundation ambassador Lee Sinje and international author and illustrator Jimmy Liao.

Visitors to the fair can contribute by buying a limited edition of Jimmy’s Joyful Dove tote bag or a copy of Lee’s The Rosy Bag of Little Yellow Flower, where part of proceeds will be channelled to the foundation and the Qing Ping Le Old Folks Home.

With it being the season of giving, there’s also the Gift of Joy Charity Campaign, where visitors can buy any items from the book fair as gifts for underprivileged children at the School for Mentally Retarded Children and St Nicholas’ Home.

With the book fair being held in conjunction with the George Town Literary Festival 2011, Popular has also lined up over 70 events to enrich visitors throughout the 10 days.

Among them, on Nov 26 at 1pm, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will be appearing at a sharing session on his recently launched book, 28th Floor: A Peek at Lim Guan Eng, along with author and his press secretary Cheong Yin Fan.

On Nov 28 at 2pm, Man Booker Prize 2007 nominee Tan Twan Eng, author of The Gift of Rain, will also be holding a sharing session with fans.

There will be a Cook Out Day on Nov 27, with a string of programmes culinary related, as well as a No. 3 Comic Express day on Dec 3, to name a few.

Artistically inclined youth may also take part in the Unforgettable Christmas Colouring (for eight to 12 years) and Painting (for 13 to 24 years) contests on Dec 2, beginning 10am.

The Popular Mega Book Fair 2011 at Straits Quay Convention Centre is open daily from 11am to 10pm from today until Dec 4.
