Funk band ready for a fun time

What say you on the issue below?

THOSE who love to groove to sexy easy-listening songs will be thrilled to learn that renowned Indonesian soul and funk band Maliq & D’Essentials will be coming to Kuala Lumpur on Dec 16 to perform at KL Live.

Maliq is an abbreviation for Music And Live Instrument Quality, which defines the band’s funky soul music style.

The award-winning Jakarta-based band comprises Angga and Indah (vocals), Widi (drums), Ilman (keyboard), Javafinger aka Jawa (bass) and Lale (guitar).

Listen up: The band’s entourage and representatives from the sponsors and organisers at the press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

They will be performing soulful hits like Terdiam, Untitled, The One, Heaven, Free Your Mind, Sunshine, Dia and Kau Yang Bisa as well as singles from their fourth album.

One aspiring local band will also be given the chance to perform as the opening act for the concert.

To participate, unsigned bands need to send demos of no longer than four minutes to Junk’ s Twitter account (www.twitter.com/JunkOnline).

Submissions can be made until Nov 20 and the public will chose the top five bands.

Maliq & D’Essentials will pick the winner, who will be announced on Dec 5 on Junk’s Twitter.

Rules for the contest can be found at www.splendid8.com

During a recent press conference, Angga said it was hard to define the band’s music but it was definitely groovy, sexy and visionary.

He said the concert will allow them to communicate with their fans here and give them a chance to find out more about the Malaysian music industry.

“We have been around for a while but have not burst onto the market so much. Perhaps it is because our music caters to a niche market and it is new to many people.

“We have had Malaysians coming for our performances in Indonesia, so we hope to get better visibility here and back home by collaborating with more local artists or performers.

“People may not be aware of our genre of music but since the last time we were here in 2005, there has been a big difference thanks to social networking sites,” Angga said.

When asked what they would be looking for in the opening act, Angga said any band with music presenting something old, new or relevant and could inspire people was welcome.

“Their performance won’t be an addition but it will be part of ours, so we hope everyone will be ready to party,” he said.

Meanwhile, Splendid Entertain-ment Sdn Bhd general manager Leonard Chua said there were a lot of Malaysian fans that were looking forward to the concert.

“This will be an opportunity for the fans here to see them perform live.

“It is also a great opportunity for upcoming bands to gain experience in Malaysia through the opening act contest,” he said.

Maliq & D’Essentials will meet fans at Tropicana Mall at 7.30pm on Dec 15.

Suria FM will also run a contest this month to select two winners to dine with Maliq & D’Essentials at Urban Restaurant, Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur a day before the concert.

The concert will start at 8.30pm and it will be free standing.
