BASF Petronas Chemicals’ annual photography competition, Conscience Camera Award, celebrated its fifth year with a prize-giving ceremony for the 2011 winners of the competition themed “Grow With BASF Petronas Chemicals” at fahrenheit88 shopping centre in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur recently.

With entries from all over the country and almost 500 photographs to choose from, the selection of winners was done earlier with expert input from Malaysian professional photographers — Patrick Low, Maxby Chan and Arthur Teng, art academician Mohamad Azlan and BASF Petronas Chemicals’ Dr Volker Seidl of the business management unit.

The company also conducted a host of other activities over the five-day photography exhibition at fahrenheit88 including the popular and exciting Kids’ Lab, an interactive programme where children get to experience the magic and excitement of chemistry in a hands-on experiment involving a lot of water and some superabsorber polymers.

Besides viewing the winning photographs and taking part in the Kids’ Lab experiments, other activities included calendar sale for charity, chemistry hunts, talks by Malaysian celebrity photographers and appearances by local artistes The Azenders, Liyana Fizi and Reza Salleh.

In his opening speech, BASF managing director Dr Joachim Queisser said, “It’s not something that people actively think about, but chemistry truly is in and behind a lot of our everyday lives.

“Our Conscience Camera Award theme this year was chosen for its reflection on the connection of chemistry to everyday life.”

He added, “We believe that this photo exhibition is a good platform to get people to know the company and what we do better on a national level, as photography is a hobby and a passion that transcends age, race, culture and gender.”
