KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's old school bands, Sweet Charity and Blues Gang, rocked Merdeka Stadium last night in an electrifying milestone concert.

Dubbed Konsert 2 Raksaksa 2011, it brought back a wave of musical nostalgia to those who had seen the two bands together in 1984 at the same venue where they delivered a memorable double bill performance.

A large portion of the audience, made up of old and young people, as well as families, in the packed stadium sang along to the songs of everyday life and humanity during the two-and-a-half-hour concert.

Blues Gang delivered a moving performance with a series of crowd favourites, such as Apo Nak Dikato, Khatulistiwa, Ibu and Oh Mama Saya Mahu Kahwin.

Vocalist Ito Mohd, who also played the harmonica, was accompanied by guitarists Julian Mokhtar and Azizi Ithnin, keyboardist Abdul Ghani Datuk Abu Talib, bassist Jim Madasamy and drummer Shaik Karim.

Sweet Charity's soulful vocalist Ramli Sarip belted out the band's classic hits like Kamelia, Teratai, Batu and Hilang Gelap in his distinctive raspy voice.

He was backed by guitarist Rosli Mohalim, keyboardist Ahmad Jaffar Jawahir and drummer Rahman Sarbani.

Both bands have had a successful musical run for more than three decades.

Konsert 2 Raksaksa 2011, originally planned for July 9, had to be postponed for security reasons due to the Bersih rally.

The concert was organised by Netzah Productions Sdn Bhd, in association with Rasamusic Sdn Bhd.
