NATURE lover Cheang Zhen Hann has the best of both worlds.
The 13-year-old said his father and grandfather who were also nature lovers not only took him out for outings and taught him the flora and fauna, but also how to capture their beauty through the lens.
Zhen Hann who was among 30 people on an outing at the Kinta Nature Park (KNP), Batu Gajah recently, named the park as one of his favourite sites and the colourful kingfisher his favourite target.
“The picturesque park is also a perfect backdrop any time of the day,” Zhen Hann, a Form One student from St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh, told MetroPerak.
The trip, organised by Perak’s Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), was led by Ooi Beng Yean.
He said all one needed was a pair of binoculars or a scope and a guidebook to enjoy birdwatching, adding that the hobby was suitable for the young and old alike.
Ooi said 70 of about 130 bird species recorded in the KNP had been accorded “totally protected” status under the Protection of Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, while the straw-headed Bulbul was accorded “globally vulnerable” status.
He said the unique feature in the park was a heronry with at least five species of herons making it their home.
Ooi said flora found in KNP included the Vanda Hookeriana, lotus flowers and the rare golden bladderwort.
Vanda Hookeriana is one of the parent species of the hybrid Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore, he added.
