A greener Weld Quay by year-end

WELD Quay in Penang will sport a new look come year-end as the stretch will be dotted with greenery under a green pilot project.

The project will see 116 Bucida (a genus of flowering plants) trees being planted by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP).

A new concrete road divider is also being constructed along the stretch under the project which is expected to be completed by December.

MPPP Infrastructure and Trans-port Committee member Teh Lai Heng said the project was initiated under the state’s Cleaner Greener campaign to transform Penang into a clean international city.

“Weld Quay is the first area that greets visitors, especially foreign tourists, who come to the island using the ferry.

“We hope with the beautification project, it will give them a good first impression,” he said when contacted on Wednesday.

Teh added that the facelift was part of the council’s efforts to spruce up the place.

“Work on the road divider began in August and the council’s Land-scape Department will carry out the beautification work by planting the trees on the divider,” he said, adding that the project cost RM260,000.
