YOUNGSTER Muhammd Asyraf Rosli of the Terengganu Sports Council (MSN Terengganu) bagged his first victory in the boys’ Under-15 competition at the fifth leg of the SportExcel Premier-Elite golf circuit at the Monterez Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam recently.

His previous best was a runner-up finish at the third leg held at Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS).

The 15-year-old SMK Jalan Tiga, Bangi student came good this time around in tasting his personal glory this season.

At the recent meet, Asyraf carded a one-over 72 to edge Paul San of Rahman Putra Golf Club and Sazanur Iman Salehin from Kelab Golf Perkhimatan Awam (KPGA) by three strokes.

Both Paul and Sazanur registered identical scores of 75 but the 15-year-old Paul finished ahead on countback.

Asyraf said he kept his composure and surged on the home stretch to recover from a poor start to claim the top spot.

“I ran into trouble as soon as I started. It was an uninspiring double bogey at the par-four first hole.

“I scored three-over 38 including another bogey in maing the turn. I am quite familiar with the course because I get the chance to play several times throughout the year.

Good job: FusionExcel International Sdn Bhd director Chan Teck Peu (left) congratulating Asyraf after his win.

“However, my shots did not land on the fairways in the first half of the play. I only got my game going at the home stretch,” the three-handicapper said.

In the back nine, Asyraf raked up three birdies at the long par-five 10th hole followed by another two successful attempts at the par-four 11th and 17th holes.

“I am delighted that I produced a strong comeback for the win,” said Asyraf.

In the boys’ Under-20 section, Mohammad Aiman Mohamad Nor from Seri Selangor Golf Club was involved in a playoff with Bryan Hong of Rahman Putra Golf Club.

Both the golfers returned with similar scores of nine-over 80. However, Mohamad Aiman parred the hole to emerge champion, while Seremban International Golf Club’s Kenneth Lui came in third - one stroke adrift.

Meanwhile, it was also a tight finish for boys’ Under-Nine winner Marcus Lim Pang Chuen of Tentera Udara who continued his domination in the series.

With five wins in a row, and playing over nine holes, Marcus completed them with a four-over 39 for a narrow one stroke advantage over his closest challenger Tengku Muzaffar.

The recent one-day meet drew 66 entries featuring in six categories.
