Work now to prevent floods

What say you on the issue below?

THE state government should undertake dredging works to deepen rivers in the state to prevent floods from taking place during the current monsoon season, says Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran.

He said floods are imminent if work to deepen rivers and to clear out monsoon drains is not carried out fast.

Citing an example, he said Taman Desa Impian, Taman Hock Aun and certain parts of Buntong in Ipoh were already experiencing flash floods on days when it rained heavily.

“The water levels at these areas tend to rise rapidly even when it has rained for less than two hours,” he said.

Kulasegaran said the state should take the necessary steps to prevent flooding and not wait for tragedy to strike.

“Remedial works must be carried out now and not after properties have been destroyed or lives are lost,” he added.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had recently reported that wet weather conditions are expected throughout the country during the monsoon period with five to six episodes of heavy rainfall.

The heavy rainfall, which normally lasts for two to three days, could cause floods especially in low-lying areas and along rivers.
