Trader fined RM500,000 for smuggling liquor and drinks

GEORGE TOWN: A businessman was fined a total of RM500,000 by a magistrate’s court for two counts of transporting illegal liquor and beverage, and evading import duties.

Lim Chin Kooi, 44, was found guilty of transporting 709 crates of beer and liquor worth RM38,884.80 without paying the import duty, at a premises on Jalan Kuantan at noon on March 23, 2008.

Guilty as charged: Lim walking out of the courtroom.

Magistrate Noor Aini Yusof also ordered Lim to be jailed 10 months for both the offences in default of the fine.

The court ordered Lim to pay the fine by Nov 21 but allowed him bail of RM20,000 pending appeal.
