Smooth flow of garbage collection in Selayang

What say you on the issue below?

GARBAGE collection services, which is currently handled by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) since Oct 16, is going as planned and without any problems.

The council has appointed new managing contractors and there are 115 contractors in charge over 158 areas in 54 zones in Selayang.

MPS is also currently in the process of replacing old rubbish bins provided by Alam Flora to new ones.

Council president Datuk Zainal Abidin A’ala said the council, through its Town Services and Environment department, was still finding ways to improve garbage management for residents’ comfort.

“We did not face any problems during the take-over and we hope to carry on without much problems in the future.

“However, we also need residents’ support to not leave their rubbish along road sides or at inappropriate places.

“We hope councillors could be the middle persons in helping the council to tackle rubbish-related problems in Selayang,” said Zainal during the fullboard meeting yesterday.

Meanwhile, a councillor brought up the issue of over-paying contractors.

“Most of these contractors usually sub-let their work to other contractors. Let’s say if we are paying a contractor RM17,000 for the work, but he sub-lets it for RM14,000, the actual work only cost RM14,000.

“If half of the 115 contractors are sub-letting to other contractors, then we are losing more than RM150,000,” he said.

Zainal urged the matter to be looked into.
