SHANGRI-LA’S Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa is collaborating with the Penang Siamese Asso-ciation to collect donations in aid of flood victims in Thailand.

Donation boxes have been placed at the lobbies of the resort’s Rasa Wing and Garden Wing for the month-long charity drive called ‘Namjai Su Chao Thai (Hope for Thailand)’.

The resort general manager Elaine Yue said it was imperative to assist the communities along the Chao Praya River.

“There is growing distress due to the forecast of more rain; putting families, especially those with children, at higher health and survival risks,” she said at the launch of the charity drive on Monday.

She added that the Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok team was working closely with the Thai Red Cross to ensure that the communities were safe.

Association vice-chairman Boon Laer Aroonratana said he and the Thai community in Malaysia were concerned about Thailand’s flood situation, which he claimed was not improving.

“A relative from Bangkok called me and said that it was still raining. Our main concern is the hygiene level there right now, because of contaminated water in the flooded areas.

“This charity drive is a very good idea. We appreciate and thank the hotel for its initiative,” he said.

He added that the St John Ambulans needed the assistance of Thai volunteers in Malaysia to help in translation and communication while carrying out relief efforts in Thailand.

The resort also contributed blankets and linens for the flood victims.
