SJK True Light in Bukit Mertajam and SMK Dato Onn in Butterworth have emerged as the Seberang Prai district Green School Awards 2011 champions in the primary and secondary school categories.

The schools, which were also last year’s champions in the same competition, each took home a cash prize of RM2,000.

SK Jawi in Sungai Bakap and SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam were placed second while SK Permatang Tok Kandu and SMK Berapit, both in Bukit Mertajam, came in third, and won RM1,600 and RM1,000 respectively.

The event was organised by the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) and sponsored by Continental Automotive Components Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

MPSP president Maimunah Mohd Shariff, who was present at the prize giving ceremony yesterday, said response from the schools was overwhelming with the students showing tremendous interest in the programme.

“This year, 19 primary schools and 17 secondary schools took part compared with 14 primary and 16 secondary schools last year.”

She added that the competition was aimed at teaching students to care for the environment through good practices at a young age.

Also present were Continental chief executive officer Yen Siew San, who sponsored RM20,000, and MPSP councillor Oon Neow Aun.

SMK Dato Onn principal Calsom Ibrahim said without the cooperation of the students and teachers, the school would not have emerged as the champion for the second consecutive year.
