RESIDENTS in the surrounding areas of the Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang are having a nightmare due to the traffic congestion there.

Their spokesman Lim Cheong Lai said the residents were disappointed that work on a proposed car park there was halted.

“The completion of the car park is important for the alleviation of traffic woes in this area.

Stakeholders speak up: The residents showing their support for a car park to be built near the Kek Lok Si temple.

“We hope that the car park can be completed as soon as possible, preferably before Chinese New Year,” he said at a press conference called by the residents on Tuesday.

On concerns raised by several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that the project would affect the heritage and environmental elements of the area, the residents believed the impact would be minimal.

“In fact, the car park will actually benefit the people around here,” Lim said.

He said the residents hoped the state would help expedite the completion of the car park.

“As the Kek Lok Si Temple is a tourist destination, the construction of a car park in the area will definitely help alleviate traffic jams especially during peak seasons,” he added.

It was reported on Oct 4 that Cultural Heritage Advisory Team member Tan Yeow Wooi had questioned whether approval had been given for the project near the temple.

Penang Heritage Trust honorary secretary Clement Liang had also called for more information on the project.

The next day, it was reported that the Penang Municipal Council slapped a stop-work order on the project as the contractor had failed to obtain approval for it.

The contractor was also ordered to restore the area to its original form.
