It pays to go green

What say you on the issue below?

THE students cheered loudly as their schools were declared the champions in the Green School award programme.

The Penang Chinese Girls Primary School and Methodist Girls School, which won the primary and secondary school categories respectively, emerged tops in the programme with their ‘going green’ methods.

Methodist Girls School teacher co-ordinator Loke Kim Hoong said she was proud that the efforts of her students paid off.

“We have been working on creating green methods that are sustainable, such as vermicultures, e-waste and enzymes, to nourish the plants in our school which are now growing very well.”

Co-ed Penang Chinese Girls Primary School teacher co-ordinators Tan Ah Ting, Lai Ai Tee and Teh In Hooi were all pleased with the results.

“We are happy that the students’ continuous support of the programme have paid off.

“They were encouraged to recycle daily which they did diligently. They also brought their own plastic containers for food instead of using plastic bags,” said Tan.

Penang Municipal Council secretary Ang Aing Thye, who officiated the ceremony on Tuesday, said the programme was to show appreciation for the efforts of the students and schools and their involvement in the green movement.

The schools were awarded RM1,000, a trophy and a certificate each.

The Green School award programme was organised by the Penang Government.
