‘Passionately You’ breast and cervical awareness campaign extends till Nov 30

What say you on the issue below?

ASSUNTA Hospital will continue to spread its “Passionately You” breast and cervical cancer awareness campaign though November, although this year’s campaign came to a close on Oct 22.

The hospital is offering screening packages at affordable prices to not only target treatment options but also reinforce on minimising risks and reducing mortalities.

The campaign is a joint community effort by Assunta Hospital, Asia Assistance, Jaya One and PJ Live Arts. This year’s campaign had the rallying call of “Don’t Duck It”, and kicked off with campus roadshows which ran from June through to September, followed by the “Buy4Love: jumble sale on Aug 20.

Try your luck: The young visitors at the party occupied with a variety of games including a Duck Hunt shooting gallery.

The closing event — “Don’t Duck It” Party, was held on Oct 22 at Jaya One where activities for the day included free breast and health examinations, a go-kart demonstration, fashion show, raffle draws and artiste performances.

In keeping with the campaign’s objectives of encouraging Malaysian women to take preventative steps in the fight against breast and cervical cancer, on-site cervical cancer vaccinations and free breast checks were conducted by medical staff from Assunta Hospital.

The campaign recorded a total of 200 on-site breast examinations, 102 women signing up for cervical cancer vaccinations, and an outreach audience of 54,801. It also raised a total of RM93,082 for the Assunta Foundation, which helps fund treatment for breast and cervical cancer patients from the low-income group.

“This year’s campaign was more digitally driven compared with previous years and judging from the response and the demographics of those who participated in the campaign’s events, I believe we have achieved our objective of reaching out to the younger generation to share with them the importance of education, prevention and early detection,” said Tetap Tiara Sdn Bhd executive director Charles Wong.

“We managed to reach close to 55,000 people and that is amazing, considering the short time that we had. Can you imagine what we could have achieved if we had more time?” said Asia Assistance Network Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Tammy Lee.

“We would like to thank everyone for their undivided support and contributions, which are much appreciated as the funds will go to the needy,” she said.

Assunta Hospital chief executive officer Choy Wah Wei, felt that Oct 22 marked a milestone for the campaign in many ways.

“We are indeed happy to have been able to reach out to more women, and empower them with more knowledge of breast and cervical cancer. All the hard work also made it possible to raise funds for the Assunta Foundation to help the underprivileged with their medical costs, which was a wonderful end to a fun campaign,” he said.

It’s a success: (From left) Campaign supporter Amber Chia, Sister Catherine Chong of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, Lee, Tetap Tiara general manager Eric Ngui and Choy revealing the final figures of the funds raised for this year’s campaign at the “Don’t Duck It” party.

The “Don’t Duck It” party saw young go-kart drivers Brendan and Calvin Seibl, Brandon Lee, Mikko Nassi and Muhammad Luqman Hakim pitting their skills against each other in the Go-Kart Mania showcase sponsored by Allianz.

Campaign spokesperson Rina Omar flagged off the warm-up round while Allianz Malaysia chief executive officer Zakri Mohd Khir and Allianz Malaysia chief sales officer Horst Habbig, flagged off the races.

This was followed by the Quacky Kart Race, an obstacle race for teams of four persons where participants had to “drive” a home-made “box kart” made from recycled materials and complete assigned tasks.

Points were awarded based on kart design creativity, time taken to complete the race, condition of the kart at the end of the race, completion of the obstacle course and the number of quiz questions (on breast and cervical cancer) that are answered correctly.

Prizes worth a total of RM5,000 were up for grabs and Team Sow Kart with its simple, white kart won the event, while Team Tenshi and its duck-shaped kart finished second.

Visitors to the event were also entertained by DJ Jeevan, cheerleaders from the Cheerleading Association and Register of Malaysia, the Zlwin Magic Mentalism Show, Asia Assistance’s staff band, and Twisted Crunk group K-Town Clan.

Local celebrities Will Quah and Nell Ng hosted the “Don’t Duck It” Party’s evening activities which included a fashion show, raffle draw and Jaya One’s first flash mob dance event, choreographed by Lim Sae Min from I Dance Studio and organised in partnership with Just Dance Magazine Malaysia.
