CLOSE to 600 Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) staff members and their families were treated to a sumptuous high-tea to celebrate Deepavali — the Festival of Lights — at the council’s multipurpose hall at Jalan 227, in Section 51A.

Guests enjoyed the lively stage show and the friendly spirit of the council staff members.

Charged with the festive mood, the crowd braved the afternoon drizzle and made it to the 3.30pm event.

Apart from the lively performances that captivated the crowd, the young and old enjoyed the mouth-watering spread of traditional Indian delicacies.

Loads of food: Petaling Jaya residents tucking into the sumptuous food served for the Deepavali Hi-Tea at the MBPJ Deepavali Open House.

Organising chairman Dr Chitradavi Vadivellu, who is also MBPJ’s acting health director, was overwhelmed with the turnout and thanked the employees for bringing their families to the event.

“We hold this Deepavali celebration annually to build rapport among the Hindu and non-Hindu staff members.

“We want others to understand our culture and arts, and to have the opportunity to savour Indian food,” she said.

Senior environment health officer Ravindran Perumal said dishes such as appam, thosai, putu mayam, puri, muruku, mutton and chicken curry were served.

Helping hand: Roslan (in blue batik) and councillor Selvarajan Rathinam giving out basic foodstuff to the urban poor at the open house.

Mayor Datuk Mohammad Roslan Sakiman and deputy mayor Puasa Taib, who were present at the event, said bringing together the staff members regardless of faith or racial background for a festival was a good way of enhancing ties.

At the event, 80 urban poor were given basic necessities like flour, sugar and oil in a bag. They were also given RM30 each.
