POPULAR Hongkong dessert house Tong Pak Fu recently opened its second outlet in Malaysia at Suria KLCC after its first at Sunway Giza in Kota Damansara.

The official opening was attended by its founders, brothers Ben and Man Li, as well as Hongkong food critic So Sze-wong, and entrepreneur Terry Ngeow, the man who brought Tong Pak Fu to our shores.

Tong Pak Fu offers an amazing array of, both hot and cold, traditional and modern desserts, including a delectable range of shaved ice that goes down well in our hot weather.

Tong Pak Fu is the Cantonese homophone of Tang Bo Hu, a famous Ming Dynasty scholar. The Li brothers chose the name for their dessert house because tong also means sugar, while pak symbolises the blooming of different varieties and styles, and fu carries the connotation of shop or mansion.

The combination brings out the message of 'a dessert shop offering a myriad of choices', be it traditional or contemporary.

The Li brothers opened their first outlet in Mongkok, Hongkong, three years ago. Now, they own 10 outlets in different parts of Hongkong.

One of the shop's most popular desserts is the Taiwanese shaved ice that the Lis have modified to suit Hongkong tastes. The ice blocks are made of 100% pure fruit juices without any artificial colourings or flavours.

Tong Pak Fu aspires to brand its shaved ice as a premium dessert and hopes it will be a popular choice just like the traditional Chinese tong sui, a classic dessert in Cantonese cuisine.

Ngeow decided to bring Tong Pak Fu (www.facebook.com/tongpakfu.my) to Malaysia after falling in love with its delightful desserts in Hongkong. He wanted Malaysians to have the chance to taste the popular shaved ice items and other authentic Hongkong desserts.

And there are plenty to choose from. Tong Pak Fu offers 45 hot and cold desserts. Besides the shaved ice and traditional Chinese desserts, it also serves some western desserts including best-sellers like creme brulee and chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream.

All-time favourites include the milk snow ice, black sesame snow ice, guava snow ice, almond snow ice and ginger snow ice.

Two offerings – the milo snow ice and the D24 Tracka durian snow ice – were concocted for Malaysian palates.
