The recently-concluded 18th Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) gave recognition to talents both old and new despite showing signs of an ailing industry.
Organised by the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia, for the first time there were only 19 awards categories this year, down from 29 last year.
While singer-songwriter Yunalis Zarai or Yuna bagged three awards, another young rising star, Najwa Mahiaddin, trailed closely behind with two major award categories.
It was also timely for Music Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) founder Beh Suat Pheng to be awarded The Anugerah Wirama for a lifetime achievement in music. In her speech, Beh reminded the industry to always be vigilant against music piracy.
“I appeal to the public to keep supporting our artistes by buying original. We have a tremendous pool of talents and we must help them excel,” she said.
The night went on smoothly. It was hosted by comedians Datuk AC Mizal and Zizan Razak of Raja Lawak fame, who kept the audience in stitches throughout the show.
Najwa, who will graduate from Berklee College of Music in the United States next year, opened the show with a medley of hit cover versions from artistes of yesteryear. Dressed in red, she was accompanied by dancers dressed to suit each song.
She began with the traditional Dondang Sayang and Cok-Cok Kendong, followed by Tan Sri P Ramlee’s Getaran Jiwa, Datuk Sharifah Aini’s Seri Dewi Malam, Carefree’s Dendangan Laguku and Datuk Sudirman Arshad’s Radio Malaysia.
Moving on to the 1990s and 2000s, Najwa continued her flawless renditions with KRU’s Fanatik, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza’s Cindai and Hujan’s Pagi Yang Gelap, before ending with her hit, Senyum, the theme for an on-going courtesy campaign. In Senyum, she was joined by AC and Zizan, who were smartly dressed in grey and silver, respectively.
The zany duo had light-hearted debates about the merits of Twitter, with AC playing the doubter and Zizan the believer and also reminded the audience that there were two Najwas, the other being Najwa Latiff.
Najwa Latiff was another star attraction for the evening. Strumming her guitar, she sang Cinta Muka Buku and later teamed up with American YouTube sensation Greyson Chance on Papparazzi.
Chance also wowed the crowd with his piano-playing, singing his hit songs, Waiting Outside The Lines and Unfriend You.
The other notable performances were the mesmerising 3 Suara (Beribu Sesalan), Yuna with Gelora Jiwa and Memo, rockers Ezad (Mengintai Dari Tirai Kamar), Rahmat of Mega (Bayangan Gurauan) and Zamani with the haunting Gerimis Mengundang.
Indonesian group Padi performed its touching Sahabat Selamanya, joined by cartoon characters Upin And Ipin, and their voiceover talent, Asyeila Putri.
Mawi and Akhil Hayy, Hafiz Suip, Stacy Anam, Salma Aziz, Hazama and Meet Uncle Hussain, Ella, Wan Nashrin, and Azlan And The Typewriter also entertained. All performances were backed by an orchestra led by music director Datuk Ramli MS.
Co-organising chairmen Rosmin Hashim and Adrian Lim later announced that there would be an AIM 2011 forum for all interested parties at The Royale Chulan Hotel in Jalan Conlay at 3pm on Dec 6.
What the winners say
Yuna (Anugerah Kembara, Best Female Vocal and Best Song)
“It’s a great honour to win Anugerah Kembara. I think I’m still a kid in the music industry, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank my loved ones, friends, fans and collaborators for making it happen.
“I wasn’t confident that the song Penakut (Best Song) would win, and I counted more on my other nominated song, Gelora Jiwa. During my visits to the United States, I learnt a lot from many talented musicians and they’re keen to know about our homegrown talents. To this, I’ve replied that they’ve been growing over the last few years, and more will come.”
Najwa (Best New Artiste and Best English Song)
“While I’m at home with English songs, I’d love to write and compose more in Bahasa Malaysia next year,” she said, adding that fellow singer and songwriter Reza Salleh gave her strong competition in the Best English Song category.
“It’s a very competitive music industry in the US. There, you must really stand out by being original. Real stars must be trail-blazers who are truly original in their music and showmanship.”
Sheila Majid (Best Album and Best Musical Arrangement)
“It’s so good to win again. Here’s hoping that all musicians, senior and junior, work together to strengthen and grow our music industry.”
Sheila credited her win to live band music which she always believed in. “That’s my usual style and there’s no stopping me here,” she said. “Yuna and Najwa are passionate musicians who are taking us in the right direction.”
Anuar Zain (Best Pop Song and Best Vocal Performance)
“I fell in love with (the winning song) Sedetik Lebih the moment I sang it. It is a beautiful song from a beautiful movie, created by Norman, Yusry and Edry or KRU (for the movie Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa).”
