TAKE one hand and lift it at a right angle to your body. Make it stiff and rigid like a bar of steel. Now think of something you’re good at. Think of people you love and who love you back. Close your eyes... spend a moment luxuriating in those warm feelings. Now ask someone to push down on your arm while you resist. Notice that they will need some strength to do so.
Justin Timberlake in the film In Time, where time is the currency and how you spend your last 24 hours matters
Then think of something you’re ashamed, guilty, angry or nervous about. Think of people you don’t like, what they’ve done and how you want to take revenge. Ask your friend to push down again. See how much weaker you’ve become? Lesson:
Whatever we’re against, weakens us. Thinking positive thoughts (literally) empowers us. This exercise works just as well as a “truth-o-meter”. Every time we tell the truth, we are stronger, and vice versa. Give it a go. Have fun with it. Imagine... your very own built-in truth machine! How is this possible? It works because all matter, including you and I, are made up of energy. Positivity energises (we vibrate at a higher frequency), for example when gratitude replaces judgment, we feel at peace. Negativity drains. Know anyone who’s an energy vampire? You only have to think about them and you feel tired.
When they come around, you feel like you’re being “nitrogen packed” — it’s like you can’t breathe, they suck the oxygen from your space.
Quick check. Do you bring sunshine or showers? Are you a breeze or a black hole? Do you perceive your life a grievance or a miracle? Be mindful of how you release your negativity so that it does not reflect back into your reality.
The rule is: When you accept all life as natural and unspoilt, life will seem effortless. Otherwise, “the present” escapes you. Only when you get out of your past and stay away from your future will you be able to experience what’s happening now.
My work involves “inspiring the courage, confidence and freedom to live our best life”.
Courage and confidence you understand, and when I say “freedom”, I mean for us to be unleashed from assumptions, expectations, prejudices, erroneous beliefs — the very things that separate us from reality and prevent us from being what we truly are — pure potential. Everything will lead us to our innermost truth. That’s the purpose of life. Life is truth. So if you want to know the truth on any subjects, checking in with your energy is the fastest way of doing so. We can’t help but be connected to All That Is. Perhaps realising that we are interconnected is an opportunity for our rebirth.
One only has to turn on the TV or walk outside to know that our world is in chaos. We are experiencing violent seismic changes. Natural catastrophes like earthquakes and tsunamis mock organised aid and government systems. Economic meltdowns — Japan, US, and Europe — have turned superpowers into sufferers.
Has Maastricht failed? What of the United Nations? Political fragmentation is obvious while threats of war and terrorism hover ominously. Disunity, disillusionment and depression are spreading like the plague. The Middle East, Europe, the United States... I believe we’re seeing the end of the “establishment” as we know it. More and more the power is in the hands of the common man. The social media and the Internet are evidence that creativity and innovation are great levellers of influence and power. Accessibility, mobility and speed set the tone of business today! In any industry, 18 months is now the standard timeline before information becomes obsolete. We keep up, step up, otherwise we die in oblivion. Last week I watched In Time, a film starring Justin Timberlake, where everyone was “born” with 25 years to live. Their currency was time, used like money, to pay for things. Everywhere people went they “spent” minutes, hours, days, months, years, and sometimes decades, in exchange for what they wanted. When their time ran out, they begged, stole or borrowed, otherwise they simply dropped dead!
If these were your last 24 hours to live, would you spend your time angry or frightened? Looking back at your life, would you be known as a peacemaker or a warmonger? What will your legacy be?
-High anxiety over bill
I SOUGHT direction from a consultant. We met for an hour and because it was a novel business idea, he couldn’t provide much direction except to say he’d do some research on it. Then I received a bill for RM12,000! When I protested, the consultant said I shouldn’t expect his services for free. I didn’t but how did he arrive at that amount? How do I handle this?
Tessie: The best person to help you is probably a lawyer. As a communicator, what I can say about negotiation and mediation is this. Before making any form of arrangement, set out the framework of your agreement. (1) Exactly what is expected (2) Can the consultant deliver (3) When is the feedback required (4) How much will it cost (5) In case of non-delivery, what then?
It seems both you and the consultant missed this step. If the above were not done, either there was an implied sense of comfort, for instance friendship where you assumed there would be understanding and acceptance of whatever terms there might be or you took each other for granted, disrespecting any differences that might occur.
What then? Talk this through to arrive at the best alternative to a negotiated settlement.
To arrive at a solution, you need to establish rapport or there would be a communication breakdown.
This happens when both parties refuse to budge.
Both parties lose because now both need to spend precious time playing this “tug-o-war” of “I want__.” “No, way Jose.”
The least the consultant can do is to justify his costs according to the specific instructions you gave him, so why don’t you start and go forward from there?
-Trouble meeting KPI
MY job is to network, attend conferences and return with market information about my business. I’m having trouble bringing back solid information and my bosses think I’m lazy, but sometimes the presentations are not substantial enough to base decisions on. I need to change my bosses’ perception about me.
Tessie: How do you want your bosses to think about you? What evidence have you shown so that they would think and feel that way about you? You say they think you’re lazy.
What proof have you shown them for them to accuse you of such a thing?
You say your KPI is to bring back market information about your business to your bosses.
That’s not all. You’re also expected to bring back information that’s substantial enough for them to base their decisions on.
This sounds rather vague. Why not have a chat with them to define exactly what type of information, how much information, how current, where from, etc, so that you can be sure of meeting your KPI.
