FAMILY: Mattress matters

What say you on the issue below?
ambience and mattress

The right ambience and mattress to set the mood

Sleep is serious business. No couple would want a mattress that could potentially blight their beauty sleep or dampen their love life. And size does matter. Especially when you are sharing your bed. But of course, there’s the other thing — price. The dent in your wallet can cause you sleepless nights. And that is not all. Your partner and you may disagree on the firm or soft issue.

Mattresses should also be able to withstand the many years of other abuse it may be put through for instance, the kids using it like a trampoline. You have to concede that without the resources or the time to check out a million different mattresses, it’s hard to know for sure which best satisfy your needs.

Fortunately, I had the opportunity to meet up with Carmen Soon, Getha Bedding’s general manager, just before the launch of the flagship Sleep Therapy Centre in Petaling Jaya. A great sport with a good sense of humour as well as an expert on mattresses and bedding products, Soon shed some light on the kind of mattress that makes for good sleep and great sex.

Consult Soon on any questions on your mattress needs. You may be wondering just how many types of mattresses actually exist out there. It turns out there are more than you think. There are air mattresses, memory foam mattresses, water mattresses, latex mattresses, inner spring mattresses and many more.

“Invest in a good mattress if you are starting a family,” Soon advised young couples. “With price comes quality and good sex. Since a mattress’ life only lasts a good seven to eight years, it is advisable to get a new one after that. As you age, your lifestyle changes and so does your bone structure. Your mattress has to accommodate those changes.

“We get so used to it that we don’t give it a thought. Most of us find ourselves in the comfort zone and we don’t think of buying a new mattress even after 10 years. We have to have an open mind and convince ourselves that it is time to change it,” she added.

Just what kind of mattress makes for the best sex and great sleep, you ask?
Well, some of the things to take into consideration are comfort and durability, of course. Whether it is supportive enough for “active” sex and if you are able to use the entire surface of the bed for lovemaking as opposed to just the middle or sides, and getting down to it, if it is bouncy.

Contrary to the belief that the length of the mattress has nothing to do with the length of sexual activity, Soon admits this factor does carry some weight.

“The longer the better, you know. The size of the mattress does play a part in great sex,” she said, teasingly. “The standard length of mattresses in Malaysia is 190cm regardless if it is single, twin, queen or king sized. As trendsetters in the mattress industry, Getha has introduced the 200cm mattress which is 6 feet by 7 inches (1.83m by 17.8cm) in length, similar to those you find in 5-star hotels. 200cm is four inches more than the standard length of a regular mattress. Have you ever wondered why couples look forward to spending a night in a nice hotel room? It’s because of their mattress and divan. Nowadays, couples want that enjoyment and pleasure every day. With it comes pleasure,” she said.

Comfort and support are essential when choosing a mattress. We stand and sit the whole day and our weight is supported by our legs. So at night, the mattress supports our weight.

“We have a wide range of latex mattresses combined with different materials. Some with coconut fibre, some with pocketed springs and high density foam. In any combination, we use latex as the core material because of its durability.

“Some couples like a firm mattress but too firm is not good as well. Sleep is a very private and personal affair. Recognising this, our store is conceptualised to emulate the privacy and soothing ambience of a bedroom to further enhance our customers’ experience. We also have specially trained consultants to educate customers on the importance of good quality latex in their mattress and to assist in seeking the right size, style and firmness to give that perfect fit,” she said.

She related how a customer once revealed that she and her husband now look forward to going to bed every night because of their new mattress. Contrary to popular belief that the harder the mattress is, the better it is for your back, proper support with cushioning is important, otherwise it would feel like you are sleeping on a rock.

Now, before jumping into bed, mind the preliminaries as well. They are equally important. Once you get into the bedroom, the ambiance plays a role as well. At the Sleep Therapy Centre, they believe in the importance of stoking your five senses, anything from latex pillows to music to get you into the mood, scented candles and pillow sprays, quaint alarm clocks to wake you up the next morning — in fact they have all sorts of things to get you into the mood and to induce sleep afterwards.

“Before you cuddle up and get cosy with your partner, put on some soft lighting and soothing music. We even have snoring rings which you can slip onto your partner’s finger so he doesn’t snore and disturb your beauty sleep,” said Soon.

I asked Soon which mattress she would give her thumbs up to for couples. She walked me to a magnificent looking mattress complete with a high divan, with a stool to use to climb onto the mattress. She asked me to try it out. Believe me when I say that I didn’t want to get down. It felt wonderful. She said the Dream Kingdom is their top-of-the-line mattress and it is exactly what you would get in five and six-star hotels.

“It has that soft feel and it’s sure to get your man looking forward to going to bed early,” joked Soon.

“And when you sleep, your legs should not hang out and your whole body should be on the mattress.”
