A TEAM from Universiti Malaya’s (UM) Law Faculty has obtained favourable placings in an international moot court competition.

It was announced in October that the team came in ninth for the prestigious Hardy C. Dillard Award.

The award is one of the most coveted prizes at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

The last time a UM Team won this award was in the 1990s.

The award combines the winning memorials of each national round and regional competition which are then re-graded by a three-judge panel.

Other winners of the Dillard Award this year were Tbilisi State University, University of Sydney and Washington University in St. Louis.

The UM Team was also placed eighth for the Alona E. Evans Award for Best Overall Memorials.

Now into its 53rd year, the Jessup competition is the world’s largest moot competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice.

The UM team comprised team leader Soo Kok Weng, Natalie Ooi Wan Qing, Pan Shan Ping, Thulsi Thivani Manogaran and Tan Hooi Ping.

The team was coached by the faculty’s Associate Prof Datin Dr Mary George.
