MALACCA: The Malacca Customs Department managed to confiscate 353,070 packs of cigarettes with unpaid duties amounting to RM4mil during three separate operations in Johor Baru and Malacca.

The department’s enforcement officers also detained two men in their late 30s who were believed to be smugglers during the operations.

State Customs director Datuk Nasir Said said that, based on preliminary investigations, the contraband was smuggled from a neighbouring country and meant to be distributed illegally here.

“The contraband was stored in various housing estates to evade detection but we managed to seize each and every bit of it through public information,” Nasir said.

He said the first operation was conducted at Mount Austin, Johor Baru, followed by another along the North-South Expressway in Kluang, Johor, before the final ambush at Taman Merdeka Jaya, here.

The operations that were conducted on Oct 29 and Oct 30 also resulted in the seizure of six vehicles.

Nasir added that the two detainees had been remanded for seven days pending prosecution under Section 135 (1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 135 (1)(d) of the same act.
