Couple renew vows after 22 years of traditional marriage

What say you on the issue below?

FOR Toh Lay Koon, getting registered on 11.11.11 is an occasion she will remember for a lifetime.

Not only was she registering to be married to her ‘husband’ of 22 years — Ewe Boon Hor, 41 — it was also her 38th birthday.

Ewe said both of them actually had had a customary marriage 22 years ago but they never got around to registering their marriage as she was too young at that time.

“Finally we decided to take the leap and register on 11.11.11 because it’s a special date and also her birthday.”

“This is my best birthday, ever,” said a smiling Toh.

Toh and Ewe were among the 111 couples who got registered in a mass wedding registration programme held at the Moral Uplifting Society on Macalister Road yesterday.

Also getting registered were hairstylists Kenny Lim, 26, and Michelle Ooi, 27, who are working in Singapore.

They made the trip back to Penang, which is Lim’s hometown, specially for this registration ceremony.

“We decided to get registered today because we met a year ago on the same month,

“I proposed to her last month and we decided to come up to Penang to get registered,” he said.

Another couple spotted in the crowd were childhood sweethearts Wong Fook Wai, 25 and Khor Ruh Tyng, 24, who have been together since secondary school.

“Today is a very special date because ‘one’ represents our one life together,” said Khor.
