A DONATION drive entitled ‘Donate a Bread and Save A Life’ has been launched by a group in Penang to help flood victims in Bangkok.

The money collected would be used to bake bread which would then be air freight to the city by Thai Airways.

The project initiated by Rose Charities Malaysia and the Chefs Association of Malaysia Penang Chapter has received the blessings of the Thai Consulate in Penang.

Going north: Three container trucks prepare to depart Lagenda Height in Sungai Petani, Kedah, for the flood areas of Thailand. The 'Help 4 Thailand' is a project by Rotary Clubs of Bandar Sungai Petani, Lulim, Butterworth and Tanjung Bungah.

Rose Charities Malaysia president Lawrence Cheah said bread would be given to the victims as it can be eaten right away without cooking.

He said they hope to raise RM50,000 through the distribution of 1,000 donation cards to volunteers who would collect the money from the public this month.

“We hope to use the money to bake as many as 100,000 loaves,” he said at the launching of the project at the Paradise Sandy Beach Resort in Tanjung Bungah.

Also present were state Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh and Thai consul general Voradet Viravakin.

Cheah said the bread would be baked by about 250 chefs from the chapter.

Bruce Lee, the chapter’s honorary advisor, said each bread can last between three to four days.

“We hope to deliver the first batch of bread by Nov 15. On reaching Bangkok, the bread will be distributed by the YMCA there,” said Lee.

Paradise Sandy Beach Resort has pledged to set up a donation box at the hotel lobby throughout this month.

“We will encourage our staff to volunteer and assist in the campaign,” said the resort’s public relations manager Virginia Ann.
