BE wary when you throw rubbish out of your vehicle.
From January you will be slapped with a RM250 fine.
The penalty, which is provided for under existing regulations, will be strictly enforced on offenders after an awareness campaign, launched in Butterworth yesterday, ends on Dec 31.
Under the campaign, which is part of the Cleaner Greener Penang drive, both the Penang and Seberang Prai municipal councils will create awareness by distributing 15,000 pamphlets and car stickers to road users.
Messages will also be posted on major billboards in Seberang Prai.
State Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said it was a waste of public funds for councils to deploy workers to collect rubbish on the roadside thrown by irresponsible people.
“Besides wasting money, it also takes time for council workers to clear the roadside of rubbish,” he said during the launching of the campaign at a Petronas station in Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth yesterday.
Also present was MPSP councillor Soon Lip Chee.
Chow said people want Penang to be as clean as Singapore.
“But we must remember that it took 20 years for Singapore to attain the level of cleanliness,” he added.
Soon said motorists should stop their habit of throwing rubbish like cigarettes boxes, empty cans, drinks packets and plastic bags from their vehicles.
