WITHOUT formal fine arts training, Lee Eng Beng constantly experiments with different mediums and colours to create his paintings.
The 44-year-old artist was grinning from ear to ear while explaining the paintings in his second solo exhibition themed ‘Penang Life’ which is currently being held at WAF Fine Art Gallery in Straits Quay, Penang.
Among the 22 pieces of art are acrylic paintings on canvas that uniquely articulate the feeling, beauty and atmosphere of Penang culture.
Two pieces that stand out from amongst the distinctive pieces — acrylic on canvas ‘Precious Moments’ and watercolour-based ‘Gossip’ — are also his favourites.
He said he held ‘Precious Moments’, which was drawn to resemble his workplace, close to his heart as it features his two sons while also giving the viewer a peek into his everyday life.
“It is about the cherished moments between father and sons,” said Lee when met at the gallery during the launching of the exhibition on Sunday.
His other favourite piece, ‘Gossip’, shows human forms interacting with each other.
“I am fortunate to be able to display this piece as I only completed it three days ago.
“When I delved into the daily life of locals by visiting a temple on Beach Street, I was deeply affected by their appreciation for life.
“After a hard day’s work, they took time off to relax and began interacting with one another,” said Lim, who then spent 12 hours to expertly turn his observation into an art piece.
Lee’s other pieces ‘Windows’, ‘Kwan Yin temple’, ‘Snack Time’ and ‘Snip Snip’ are also being showcased at the exhibition.
The exhibition is open until Dec 2 from 10.30am to 10.30pm daily. Admission is free.
