MUAR: The Muar Rotary Club and the Muar municipal council have teamed up to plant 1,111 Bucida trees at Dataran Tanjung Emas here to mark the once in a century date Nov 11.2011.
The groups, headed by council president Zulkiflee Abbas, also started the project at 11am sharp with the planting of the first Bucida tree at the spot.
Zulkiflee said the project was aimed at promoting and encouraging the local residents to plant trees to save the environment and to green Bandar Maharani.
A day to remember: Zulkiflee (third form right wearing songkok) planting the first Bucida tree at Dataran Tanjung Emas while Muar Rotary Club president Dr D. Senthil (second from left) looks on. He said the earth was losing its rainforest every minute and the loss of the forest would have adverse effect on the planet as well as on mankind.
Trees play a crucial role as fundamental components of the biodiversity that formed the foundation of the living networks and system.
We must always try to protect our trees and we also call on the residents to plant trees, he said at Dataran Tanjung Emas yesterday.
Meanwhile, Muar Rotary Club president Dr D. Senthil said the club had made tree planting an important project and had planted several thousand trees over the years.
He said last year the club planted some 1,010 trees to mark the Oct 10, 2010 date and this year, together with the council, it planted 1,111 trees.
He said tree planting was an environmental project and the club hoped the business sector in and around the town would help in sponsoring the programme.
We all need trees to regulate surface and underground water besides reducing erosion and providing habitat for wildlife.
