SOME 1,000 people are expected to take part in a crime prevention awareness and unity treasure hunt in Paya Terubong and Air Itam, Penang, on Nov 27.

The 1Malaysia Treasure Hunt 2011 was mooted by political leaders and voluntary organisations in Paya Terubong to foster closer ties between the relevant agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, police and the community.

Paya Terubong Barisan Nasional coordinator Koh Wan Leong, who is also the project advisor, said the treasure hunt route would cover important buildings in Bandar Baru Air Itam, Paya Terubong and Air Itam.

Responsible organisers: Koh (right) speaking at the press conference on the 1Malaysia Treasure Hunt 2011 at the Paya Terubong BN co-ordinating service centre.

They include police stations, clinics, fire station and community policing headquarters.

“It’s a good way to let the people know the location of the buildings in case of emergencies,” he said at a press conference at his office in Bandar Baru Air Itam.

The treasure hunt, he said would be divided into two categories — for motorcyclists and pedestrians.

He said motorcyclists would have to cover 10km while pedestrians would have to walk about 4km.

First prize winners for both categories will receive RM300 each and a trophy while the second and third prize winners in both categories will receive RM200 and RM100 respectively as well as trophies.

Koh said a lucky draw contest would also be held for participants. There would also be a calligraphy demonstration.

“Since it is a 1Malaysia event, people from other constituencies can also take part in the event,” he said.

The event, which will be flagged off at SMK Air Itam, will start at 8am. The registration will be held an hour earlier.

The motorcycles to be used by participants will be inspected for safety by organising committee members between 2pm and 6pm at the Farlim Complex car park a day before the event.

Entry forms can be obtained from the bread seller at the Farlim Complex hawkers’ centre and Chin Hooi Hooi Optometry (5th floor of the complex).

Other places include Block 354-G-3 Macallum Street Flat, People Books and Sports Centre (opposite Sui Wah near Air Itam market) and Penang MCA headquarters on Jalan Pahang. Details, call 04-2267827.

The entrance fee is RM10 per partici- pant. Free T-shirts and lunch will be pro- vided. Closing date for registration is Nov 20.
