Tournament goes in record book and raises RM140,000

What say you on the issue below?

THE 1 Malaysia NGOs’ (non-governmental organisations’) charity bowling tournament raised over RM140,000 from its nine organisers.

Among the organisers of the event held recently at the Sunway Megabowl in Sunway Pyramid were the Rotary Club of Gombak, Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang, Lions Club of Tropicana, Girls’ Brigade Malaysia (Selangor/Federal Territory Group Council), Red Crescent Society (Petaling Chapter), Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (Petaling District), Tun Sardon Foundation, Apex Clubs of Malaysia and Talk2Heart (Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment).

The event also achieved a record for the Biggest Participation of Bowlers in a Single Event, with 1,152 participants (divided into 288 four-member teams).

Malaysia Book of Records representative Leona Paul presented a mock certificate recognising this feat to the event’s organising chairman, Raymond Chin of Rotary Club of Gombak.

The funds raised came from the teams’ entry fees, donations and souvenir programme advertisements, with the proceeds channelled to the good cause of serving the less fortunate in the community by the nine NGOs.

The tournament was divided into six sessions (with the first beginning at 9.15am and the last at 8pm), where each individual bowled two games. Prizes were given to the top three bowlers with the highest individual scores and the top three teams in each session.

The tournament was launched by Rotary District 3300 governor Dr S. Raveendra Kumar. Also present to hand out the prizes was Tropicana Lions Club president Ngeu Keng Boon.

This is the third time that the Rotary Club of Gombak were spearheading the organising of a charity bowling tournament but the first time that it has involved so many NGOs.

Rotary Club of Gombak teamed up with the Girls’ Brigade Malaysia (Selangor/Federal Territory Group Council) for the first tournament in 2009, which saw a participation of 192 bowlers and RM12,300 raised. The second tourney last year featured 384 bowlers who helped to accumulate RM18,479 in donations.
