Supping at Golden Water

What say you on the issue below?

IF YOU are looking for a Japanese restaurant that offers quality food with a dash of creativity, Kin No Mizu dishes out just that.

Opened in January this year, the contemporary fine-dining restaurant located at Level 2 of The Intermark in Kuala Lumpur, has everything Japanese, from traditional specialities to fusion home-style cooking, and is sister to the hugely-popular Mizu outlets located in Bangsar and TTDI.

“Mizu means water, and we cannot survive without it – it’s what gives us life. Kin No Mizu means golden water,” owner Simon Sangawa says, adding that the concept of water runs across all three restaurants.

At Kin No Mizu, tables are placed over glass-paned flooring that has running water beneath it, and earthy wood panels lend a subtle privacy without destroying the restaurant’s open concept.

Sangawa adds that he does not want to compromise taste and quality by charging extremely low prices, but neither does he want to charge exorbitant rates that burn a hole in one’s pocket.

Seated in one of the three private rooms available, we start off with an appetizer of cold spinach (RM12+) as well as a seared tuna salad (RM35+).

The chilled spinach with sesame seeds, fish flakes and dashi sauce is refreshing, getting our palates going, while a sesame-mustard sauce adds a tangy zest to the salad of lettuce and seared tuna.

Very fresh snapper, scallop, tuna, prawns and salmon are beautifully arranged on ice in Kin No Mizu’s assorted sliced raw fish sashimi for two to three persons (RM150+) – sashimi lovers will definitely enjoy this dish.

For those more into sushi than sashimi (like yours truly), the mizu roll sushi with original recipe (RM36+) will leave you craving for more. The prawn tempura rolled in rice, seaweed, eel and avocado garnished with an avocado tartar sauce and flying fish roe make a mouthful of flavours.

A Kin No Mizu specialty is the pot-au-feu with pan-fried foie gras and white radish (RM48+). Although the foie gras is an acquired taste, the gently simmered radish and broth are warm for both the heart and the stomach.

The simmered cod with special miso sauce (RM55+), however, may not be liked by all, as the thick curry-like sauce and cod make an eccentric combination of both flavour and texture.

For beef lovers out there, the tenderly braised ox cheek with special blended sauce (RM38+) lives up to its name, as the braised cheek really melts in your mouth together with the tasty sauce.

Kin No Mizu is also offering a Ramadan Feast (RM45+) throughout the month of August consisting of a a starter of cold spinach, followed by a platter of beef teppanyaki, grilled mackerel, assorted tempura, fried chicken, garlic fried rice, an omelet and asparagus with mushrooms, as well as sides of sushi, potato salad, miso soup, sirap Bandung, dates and fruit.

The restaurant is open from noon to 3pm and 6.30pm to 10.30pm daily. Call 03-2166 2888 for information or reservations.
