THE first house to be built in Kampung Melayu Sungai Rapat, Ipoh, will undergo a RM30,000 refurbishment with the help of an allocation from state authorities.
State senior executive councillor Datuk Hamidah Osman said RM25,000 would be from Yayasan Bina Upaya while the balance would be from the allocations for her constituency.
“The house once belonged to the village’s first chief, Abdul Hamid Sheikh Mohd, who started the settlement more than a century ago,” she said.
“The house is now occupied by his only living child Mohd Ramli and his disabled child, Mohd Rasul,” she said.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the house recently, Hamidah said the funds would be disbursed through the foundation’s Infra Bina Upaya initiative.
Mohd Ramli, better known as “Prof Ramli” among the locals due to his command of English, now has every reason to smile as the state government would be rebuilding his father’s home.
“It has been my wish to be able to live in a new and comfortable home and I am grateful to Allah for answering my prayers,” he said.
Mohd Ramli said he once worked as a translator at Utusan Melayu Press in Singapore during the 1950s.
“Among the editors I worked with were Yusof Ishak, Abdul Samad Ismail and Keris Mas (Malaysia’s first National Laureate),” said Mohd Ramli, who is a former student of SM Anderson in Ipoh.
