Residents angry over fencing up of public parking area

What say you on the issue below?

RESIDENTS of Taman Megah in Cheras are angry with a warehouse owner for fencing up a public parking area in Jalan 27.

Taman Megah Residents Association chairman Chay Yun Chin said residents had been using the public parking area of 29 bays for more than 10 years.

“We already face a shortage of parking space. Many would park there when there is the pasar malam and morning market,” he said.

Unhappy: Residents are objecting to the fencing up of a public parking area in Jalan 27.

Chay said they had two meetings with the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) after they noticed work being carried out to fence up the area.

Serdang MCA Public and Services Complaints Bureau chairman Allan Liew said the council should act as the mediator as the residents had no right to deal with the warehouse owner.

Serdang MCA deputy chairman Datuk Hoh Hee Lee hoped the warehouse owner could co-operate with the council and residents.

A warehouse representative said he was not in position to make decisions as his superior was overseas.

He added that they had stopped building the fence.

Liew lashed out at the council’s lack of enforcement as there has been an increase in the number of illegal hawker stalls and extensions.

“The council should not condone wrong-doers,” he said.

Councillor Lee Ah Seng said they had told the warehouse owner to stop fencing up the area failing which, enforcement action would be taken.

MPKj corporate communications head Shariman Mohd Nor said the space outside shops, including the five-foot way, belonged to the council.

“Those who want to use it for their own dedicated parking space have to apply to the council and red lines will be drawn,” he said.
