A FOOD court in Relau, Penang, was re-launched following a facelift which cost RM500,000.

Located opposite the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA), the PISA Corner Cafe underwent major renovation from June to August before it reopened for business in early September.

Formally known as Ji DeShi Food Stalls, the food court now has nearly 40 stalls compared to just 13 previously, offering a variety of hawker fare and drinks with a seating capacity of 600.

The new management — Aspirasi Utara Engineering — took over following a successful bid in an open tender process in December last year.

“The renovation costs a lot as the place used to be run-down. We increased the height of the roof and installed a retractable roof for better ventilation. We also changed the flooring to tiles for increased hygiene and rearranged the positioning of the stalls to avoid congestion. New facilities were also installed such as a water filtering system and an automated dish washing machine,” said its manager Mohd Noor Sirajajudeen.

Mohd Noor said the underlying concept was based on the ‘Cleaner Greener Penang’ campaign initiative.

He was speaking after the official reopen-ing recently by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

In his speech, Lim said that the open tender system had resulted in more revenue for the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP).

“MPPP used to collect only RM2,000 in monthly rental from the previous operator. Under the present management, the council is getting RM13,000 per month,” he said.
