THE Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCAS & FT) will begin construction on its new building as soon as they get the greenlight from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).
Its president Datuk Seri Lam Peng Chong said the centre, which was established 49 years ago, was looking forward to redeveloping its current premises into a nine-storey building to meet future needs.
“By 2020, the centre is expecting to cope with double or triple the number of its occupants now,” he said at the ground-breaking ceremony last week graced by the presence of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The building will be equipped with dormitory facilities for both male and female residents, a respite care to relieve parents who may have to attend functions and engagements, additional parking bays and space to generate revenue to ensure the continued survival of the centre.
The centre has already raised RM15mil for the RM18mil project, and hopes to raise RM3mil with support from the public.
“We are more than encouraged that we don’t have to wait much longer, that is why we have the ground-breaking ceremony,” said Lam.
He said the Sultan had given his approval to name the building as Bangunan Sultan Idris Shah.
At the event, three disabled persons from the SCAS & FT were also presented with certificates in recognition of their success in climbing Mount Kinabalu on Oct 16 during the Climb Beyond Disability project by the Rotary International District 3300 with the Bandar Utama Rotary Club.
They were Mohd Irwan Hakeem, 29, Mohd Asman, 40, and Janice Yim. They were part of the 18 disabled climbers who took part in the project.
Also present were Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.
