Raid on junk food traders in Gombak

What say you on the issue below?

FOUR motorcycles, an ice-cream box and six baskets of junk food were seized during the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) raid on traders at SK Taman Selasih in Gombak.

This is the third time the council had conducted raids on traders selling junk food in Selayang.

During the raid, led by MPS Licensing Department Petty Traders division head Mohd Zikry Zulkifle, summonses were issued to six traders.

“We issued notices to the traders four months ago but they ignored all of them.

Going on the lorry: MPS enforcement officers confiscating a motorcycle with an ice-cream box in front of SK Taman Selasih in Gombak.

“So, we are taking drastic measures like taking away their food items and motorcycles.

“The traders sold titbits, drinks and junk food to primary schoolchildren.

“Because of the lucrative business, many traders ignore our warnings and continue to do business,’’ he said.

The traders parked their motorcycles by the roadside obstructing traffic flow and make it hard for parents to pick up or send their children to school.

The school and parents are concerned about the students consuming junk food that could lead into food poisoning.

Mohd Zikry said the traders operated from noon to 2pm.

“There have been many complaints in Selayang about petty traders doing business outside the school compound.

“This is prohibited and the council will carry out raids monthly.

“The council has received complaints from the schools and parents in Taman Selasih in Gombak, Kampung Melayu Sungai Buloh and Bukit Rawang Jaya,’’ he said.
