KARATE exponent R. Puvaneswaran and swimmer Chan Kah Yan were named as the 2010 Federal Territories Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Both Puvaneswaran and Kah Yan were the panel’s choice for their outstanding results in 2010. Puvaneswaran, currently a coach, won the gold medal in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

Kah Yan, who is 19 and a fulltime trainee currently preparing for the SEA Games in Indonesia, made her presence felt in the 2010 Malaysia Games in Malacca when she won seven gold medals.

In the Asian Games, Kah Yan established a new national record of 30.15 in the 50m backstroke. The previous record of 30.19 was also set by her in the Common-wealth Games in New Delhi.

Kah Yan said she was happy but surprised to be hailed as the Best Sportswoman in FT.

“This is the first time I have been voted as the Best Sportswoman. The award will certainly motivate me to give my best in the SEA Games,’’ said Kah Yan.

The Jakarta SEA Games will be her third in the series. She will be taking part in three individual events — 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke — but she was not expecting any medals.

“I will be aiming for personal bests in all three events,’’ said Kah Yan after receiving the prestigious award from Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Both Puvaneswaran and Kah Yan received RM5,000 cash, trophy, certificate and challenge trophy each.

Swimmer Joshua Lee Leam Yoong was named as the Most Promising Sportsman while diver Ng Yan Yee won the Most Promising Sportswoman award. They were rewarded with RM3,000 each.

The Kuala Lumpur hockey squad were presented Best Team in the men’s category and received RM10,000. The Best Women team award went to the KL netball squad.

Kuala Lumpur Tenpin Bowling Association’s Mohd Hisham Mohd Nor and Dzulkarnain Sapian were presented with the Best Official and Best Coach awards.

Raja Nong Chik said the awards should serve as an incentive to the FT athletes and officials to excel in local and international competitions.

“We are certainly proud with our athletes contribution to Malaysia’s medal tally in the Asian and Commonwealth Games. The FT contingent also did well in the 2010 Malaysia Games with 43 gold, 42 silver and 49 bronze medals.

“We hope to see the FT contingent surpass the target in next year’s Malaysia Games in Pahang,’’ said Raja Nong Chik.
