Programme to encourage personal growth

ABOUT 420 underprivileged students in the Manjung district will get to learn about communication and social skills under the “Discover Yourself with Vale” programme.

Jointly organised by Vale, a Brazilian mining company, and Outward Bound Malaysia, the programme intends to reach out to students aged between 10 and 16 years old to teach them skills that encourage personal growth.

Vale pre-operations general manager Andre Kopperschmidt said these students would be taught interpersonal, survival and leadership skills through courses comprising challenging expeditions and outdoor activities.

“The programme will take place in three instalments at different times between November 2011 and October next year,” he said.

Kopperschmidt said Vale was a responsible corporate citizen with a firm commitment to the community.

“As we continue to move forward in Perak, we look at diverse ways that will enrich our lives together, particularly in sustaining and impacting future generations to come,” he said.

He said a full-day educators’ course was launched recently to expose teachers from the district to the programme.

“About 60 teachers took part in the course to learn about the programme’s benefit and they will share what they have learned with students in their schools,” he said.

“Subsequently, roadshows will be organised for schools participating in the programme so the teachers can share their experience with a wider audience,” he added.

The next instalment of the programme, a 10-day Student Camp course will take place in December.
