Overcrowding at Immigration Office irks customers

What say you on the issue below?

THE overcrowding at the Immigration Office in Puchong Utama has been a common sight since the counters started operating in February.

Many people from Puchong and the nearby townships prefer to apply or renew their passports at this office instead of travelling to Putrajaya.

Currently, there are 10 officers attending to over 200 customers a day at four counters.

Busy: There are four counters at the Immigration Office in Puchong Utama serving about 200 applicants a day.

Selangor Community Policing group coordinator Kuan Chee Heng said the immigration office was sharing the premises with the National Registration Department, which has six counters processing between 300 and 500 applications a day.

“There are only 80 seats inside and many people have to stand while waiting for their turn, or wait in the restaurant next door.

“Some of these people get impatient and vent their anger on the officers on duty,” he observed.

He added that having a huge crowd in the premises was not conducive either.

“The place gets noisy and messy, affecting both members of the public and the officers,” said Kuan.

He suggested that the Immigration Office be moved to another place.

Saujana Puchong Residents Association chairman Martin Lim proposed a hypermarket nearby as the ideal location.

“There is ample parking and the officers can attend to the public’s needs in a comfortable environment,” he said.

He added that passports could be applied via online too, to save time.

Kuan also appealed to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council to allocate two parking lots in front of the office for the elderly and the disabled.
