Not as stated in A-G’s Report

THE number of applicants who have not been distributed low-cost housing units is fewer than stated in the Auditor-General’s Report 2010, said a state executive councillor.

Wong Hon Wai, who is state Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman, said that the actual figure was 119,910 and not 141,479 as stated in the report.

“The Housing Department and the state Centre of Information, Technology and Communication have found that the number as of 31 Dec last year is 119,910,” said Wong.

He said statistics showed that 87% of the applicants were those who had applied more than five years ago while 68% were those who had registered for more than 15 years.

“For the latter category, we are unable to verify whether they are still interested or in need of the low-cost housing,” he said.

“As such, we encourage all low-cost housing applicants to update their data via the PN2 forms so that our systems will be constantly updated,” said Wong at a press conference after launching a repainting project for the Block B flats in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam.

He said that a few months ago, a re-wiring project for the Block A of the Kampung Melayu flats was completed.

“We are going to take turns between the two blocks. After we finish repainting Block B, we shall look into repainting Block A, and rewiring Block B,” he said.

He added that the repainting project cost RM270,000, of which 80% was borne by the state government while private companies contributed the rest.
