More parking space: Bays in Damansara Jaya realigned

What say you on the issue below?

THE parking bays at the Damansara Jaya commercial area have been realigned to temporarily solve the parking problem caused by the closure of the Atria shopping complex for upgrading work.

Many workers with season passes at the Atria had resorted to double-parking or parking along the yellow lines on the main road.

In September, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) started issuing notices to tow illegally parked cars, causing frustration among those working in the area.

MBPJ councillor Terrence Tan said the council decided to realign the 60° parking bays to 90° to accommodate more bays.

A real mess: Vehicles double parked at the Damansara Jaya commercial area.

“This temporary measure has increased parking space in the commercial area by more than 100 bays. The roads are now slightly narrower but it is a win-win situation for everyone. There are more parking bays and residents and customers do not have to double-park all over the place,” said Tan.

He said there would also be additional parking bays once Gamuda moved out of the area.

Gamuda takes up a significant number of shoplots but has started to move their operations to another location in stages. The move is expected to be completed by December.

He said the parking project costing RM18,000 was awarded to two contractors so that work could be completed faster.

Work to remove the old markings and replace them with new thermoplastic ones was expected to be completed within a week.

“We initially had another proposal to rebuild and resurface the main roads to create more parking space but I rejected the idea because the project would cost RM250,000 and only increase the bays by about 40,” he said.

Tan said once the Atria development was completed, they would study the area as a whole before deciding to revert to the original alignment or maintain the new arrangement.

Meanwhile, he said work had also started to increase the number of parking bays in Jalan SS22/11.

There have been a lack of parking space in the area which has a row of shoplots and a private college a stone’s throw away.

“About RM117,000 has been approved to upgrade the main road so that we can add about 40 more bays there.

“Parts of the retaining wall on the drains have also given way so it would be upgraded as well,” said Tan.
