MAHSURI Badminton Club (MBC) organised a day-long badminton doubles festival tournament at the LADA indoor stadium in Kuah, Langkawi, where more than 250 players competed in 10 categories.

The 10 categories of the tournament called Tahan Lasak Badminton Festival consisted of only doubles events for boys under-12, under-15, under-19, men 20-29 age-group, 30-39 age-group, 40-49 age-group, above 50 years and an elite group.

For the women, there were only two categories — under-30, and 31 years and above.

The tournament, played on Deepavali day on Oct 26 from 8am to past midnight not only took its toll on the players but also the court officials.

Kuah assemblyman Datuk Nawawi Ahmad, his wife Datin Sabariah Md Hassan, MBC patron Datuk Tan Hong Eng and MBC president Nor Saidi Nayan were among those present at the late night prize presentation ceremony.

Organising secretary Haso Naran Dass said it was a great experience, not only for the players but also the officials.

“Never has there been a tournament with so many events organised in one day. Full praise for the officials who worked hard non-stop for the success of the tournament. It was really a badminton fest lasting over 16 hours.

“Even though it was a public holiday, we opted to spend our time and energy to organise the tournament just for the love of it,” he said.

Haso Naran also announced that the three-day Langkawi Malays Closed doubles tournament would be held from Dec 15 to 17 at the same venue.

The events will be men’s doubles, women’s doubles, men’s veteran doubles and boys doubles.

The closing date is Dec 8 and each pair will have to pay RM30 to compete in the tournament.
