A RECORD number of 67 couples will be registering their marriages at the state National Registration Department today.

State department director Alias Mamat said the total number of couples tying the knot on 11-11-11 was even more than Oct 10 last year.

“There was nothing unusual in the number of people coming to register their marriage here on 10-10-10. Not many people requested to get married on that day, unlike this time around,” he said.

According to Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association president Datuk Ooi Foh Sing, the popularity of the date could be due to the inclination by most to be number one.

“Everyone wants to be number one but I think 11-11-11 is also a very special date because it only happens once in a century,” he said.

Ooi said 100 couples would be tying the knot at the association’s hall today.

“We had to limit the number of couples and hold another session on Nov 20 to satisfy everyone. However, some feng shui experts have said that 11-11-11 is actually not a good date for certain people to get married.

“But I do not think many are too bothered about that,” he added.

Chan Meng Khor Moral Uplifting Society chairman Lee Yoke Tong said 57 couples had registered to get married at the society in Bercham today.

“We initially had more couples but some have pulled out at the last minute after feng shui experts said it was not auspicious for those born in the Year of the Rat to tie the knot on 11-11-11,” he said.

Meanwhile, a number of expectant mothers are also intending to deliver their babies on this date either through induced labour or via Caesarean section.

Although accountant Nor Ashikin Arifin, 32, had not paid any attention to the buzz around 11-11-11, she opted to induce labour today after learning that she was suffering from a medical condition known as placenta calcification.

“It is the hardening of my placenta and I fear it may affect the growth of my baby.

Her original due date was Nov 23.

Nor Ashikin and her husband Muhammad Nor Fuad Ishak, who works as an assessment officer, are expecting a boy.

The couple already have two daughters.
