Armed for the rat race 1,327 students graduate from TARC Penang

What say you on the issue below?

FOR someone who had once failed in his studies and career, Chen William beat the odds to graduate with a Diploma in Business Studies (E-Commerce and Marketing) from the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) Penang.

The 24-year-old not only passed with flying colours but also received the Book Prize for the 2010/2011 academic year.

“After completing my SPM, I went out to work because of my poor exam results.

“However, after working for four years, I realised I would not get anywhere due to the lack of tertiary education.

“Hence, I quit the job and enrolled in TARC where I worked hard to earn a diploma,” he said after receiving his scroll.

Chen was among 1,327 students who received their scrolls during TARC’s 15th convocation ceremony held at the TARC hall yesterday.

Although he was initially worried about keeping up with lessons, he said he had the support and encouragement from his lecturers and parents to excel.

Four other students — Yeap Chun Jie, Eu Kharn Ying, Cheah Chin Ling and Teng Sook Boon, all 20, also excelled in their studies and received the College Book Price from TARC principal Dr Tan Chik Heok.

Dr Tan said in his speech that work on a new building on the campus is expected to begin next year.

“Currently, we are waiting for the approval to build a three-storey multi-purpose library, a block of four-storey tutorial rooms and a twin lecture block to provide better facilities to cater to the growing number of students.

“The blocks can accommodate approximately 800 students and it is estimated to be completed within 18 months,” he said.
