An act of charity

What say you on the issue below?

HARI Raya Aidiladha celebrations in Kampung Ceti, Batu Ferringhi in Penang, saw 50 villagers coming together to witness the sacrifice of three cows.

After the Aidiladha prayers and tahlil, the cows were brought to a field at the village and about eight volunteers slaughtered and skinned the cows while others teamed up to cut, weigh, pack and distribute the meat among the villagers.

Batu Ferringhi Village Development and Security Committee chairman Jamaluddin Hashim said offering sacrificial cow or buffalo was an important act of charity in Islam because it provided the needy with meat.

“A cow is equal to seven offerings, which means seven people can equally receive the sacrificial meat. A whole cow costs about RM2,200,” he said yesterday.

Tedious task: Volunteers deboning the meat during their Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration in Kampung Ceti.

Jamaluddin said such offering would also bring joy to those who made the donation as their concern and generosity were extended to others besides their family and friends.

He said one part of the slaughtered meat was given to the person who made the offering, another part was given to his friends and relatives, whether rich or poor, and the final portion was given to the needy.

Also present was Kebun Bunga assemblyman Jason Ong Khan Lee, who donated a cow.

Muslims across the world celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha or ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ — a religious day to mark the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

During the celebration, Muslims commemorate and remember the trials of Prophet Ibrahim.
