SMK LA Salle’s Under-17 football team won the inaugural Datuk Mokhtar Dahari Cup, organised by Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor Berhad, at the MPSJ Sports Complex Stadium in Subang Jaya recently.
The heavy downpour before the game did not hamper La Salle and opponents USJ 8 from producing an exciting and entertaining game in front of over 500 spectators. The match ended 2-2 with La Salle winning the penalty shootout 4-3.
La Salle scored their first goal in the fourth minute through striker Kuhan Rajesveran.
In the 12th minute, Muhammad Fadli Muhd Fadzir equalised for USJ 8.
In the second half, La Salle once again took the lead through Matthew Tritan Paul from a fast counter-attack in the 60th minute.
La Salle were then reduced to 10 men when Kuhan was shown the red card for rough tackling. With a one man advantage, USJ 8 fought back and equalised through Muhd Nazarudin Muhd Ali in stoppage time.
The game then went into a penalty shootout where La Salle goalkeeper, M Danial Zuhairi Zainurin became the hero with two saves, which led to La Salle claiming a 4-3 victory.
La Salle took home the championship trophy and a cash prize of RM5,000 while USJ 8 received a championship medal and a cash prize of RM4,000.
SMK Section 16, Shah Alam and SMK Bukit Jelutong finished third and fourth respectively. Each received a championship medal and a cash prize of RM3,000 for third place and RM2,0000 for fourth place.
In addition, the eight teams which qualified for the quarter-finals also received jerseys sponsored by Perangsang Selangor.
SMK USJ 8’s captain, Dirga Surdi was crowned as the best player and Danial of La Salle the best goalkeeper. Zulkarnain Rosli of SMK Datuk Harun was the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals.
Prizes and trophies were presented by Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali with Datuk Emran Kadir, chairman of the Datuk Mokhtar Dahari Cup Football Championship main committee, Mohd Salleh Mohd Kassim, deputy director of the Selangor Education Department and Raja Idris Raja Kamarudin, chairman of Perangsang Selangor present.
