800 needy children get back-to-school items

GEORGE TOWN: Some 800 underprivileged children from Penang received essential school items as part of their school preparation next year.
The charitable initiative, ‘Raise Fund to Supply Schooling Necessities For Underprivileged Students’, was jointly organised by Junior Chamber Internation (JCI) United Penang and House of Hope.
The organisation has more than 1,400 families registered under them.
House of Hope director Khoo Cheng See lauded the event’s main sponsor, MasMeyer, for contributing RM80,000 for a good cause.
““JCI United has been helping us for the past two years and we managed to get more sponsors to help the needy,”” she said in her opening speech.
Nurarisha Zulaika Faizul, 12, from SK Datuk Keramat, who is a first-time recipient in a charity event, shared her joy and happiness.
““I am so happy. The school bag means a lot to me for the new school term,” she said.
Mohamad Zainil Noor, 12, and
his sister Nor Azila Noor, 11, were also among the hundreds who received their school items in the event.
Both siblings are from SK Padang Tembok and were delighted to be the recipients for the third time.
Their mother is a stroke patient while their father is unemployed. The pupils have three other siblings, including two infants.
House of Hope is a non-profit organisation that helps single mothers and orphans and provides shelter for the underprivileged and disabled in Penang.
