MORE than 800 poor students in schools in the Setiawangsa parliamentary constituency received much-needed help in the form of uniforms, shoes, socks and bags to prepare them for the new school intake next year.
The students from 16 primary schools and nine secondary schools received the goodies from Setiawangsa MP Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique at a function organised by the Setiawangsa Educational Development Consultative Council, also known as the M3P Council.
Zulhasnan also announced a one-off allocation of RM7mil from the Federal Territory Education Department to be channelled to the schools.
“Each student will receive RM100 each as assistance to help prepare them for the new school year,’’ Zulhasnan said at the event organised at Stadium Titiwangsa to distribute the items.
“Students whose parents earn less than RM2,500 a month require our help as school supplies are getting costly.
“The money, no matter how small the amount, will ease their financial burden, especially if they have a few children going to school,’’ he said.
However, students were not the only ones grinning from ear-to-ear. Their parents and teachers were also pleased when Zulhasnan pledged to provide more funds to schools as well as Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) to to carry out activities to enhance the educational experience of the students.
“Parents also play an integral part in making sure that the students’ welfare and education are taken care of.
“This can be achieved by working together with the teachers,’’ said Zulhasnan.
“By working together, both parents and teachers can decide on the best ways to support the children’s education and help them become star students and excel in their studies,’’ he said.
Zulhasnan said both his service centre in Setiawangsa and the Yayasan Amal Wangsa, whose chairman is Zulhasnan’s wife Datin Seri Siti Nooriah Ana Razak, would strive to work together to help schools and their respective PTAs to improve their activities for the benefit of the students.
